Free Books: Update!

Free Books: Update!

You guys… we’re STILL enjoying free books from Imagination Library.  I can’t say enough good things about this awesome program.  If you missed my post a few years ago about how you can get a free book every month for your child until they reach age 5, take a look here!

In fact, our oldest child has received so many books I had to get creative with some book storage solutions :/

Ikea FTW!  Ikea spice racks make excellent bookshelves and take up very little space.  You can find them at Ikea or if you’re like me and just can’t Ikea right now, Amazon is always there for you.  It’s always there for me.  We’re besties.

A Force to be Reckoned With

A Force to be Reckoned With

Alright, guys… I fell for a Facebook ad.  Ok, so it’s not the first time, but hey, it’s worked out well every time I’ve fallen for one, so that’s a good thing, right (just nod your head in agreement… it will make me feel better)?  Maybe I’m a good skeptic and only fall for the ones I know will work out in my favor or maybe I’m just lucky, but back to the original reason I fell for the Force of Nature ad.

No, I’m not talking about a hurricane, tornado, or any other natural disaster: it’s a cleaning product.  One you make AT HOME.  Weird, right?  Now, if you know me well at all you know I hate bleach.  So much so I don’t even know if we currently have a bottle of bleach in our house right now <gasp!>.  But seriously, guys… bleach has been proven to be more harmful than beneficial (don’t just take my word for it… do your own research. No, really.  Do it… you’ll thank me later) and there are other cleaning products out there that disinfect as well or better than bleach.  This ad claimed that the cleaning product is proven to be more effective at disinfecting than bleach, is completely safe around infants and pets (yes, Rem the chiweenie… it’s safe for you, too, buddy), doesn’t stain or discolor fabrics, deodorizes, is cheaper to produce, does your laundry, and cooks breakfast for you.  You can’t just blow up my Facebook feed with these claims and not pique my interest, sneaky marketing people.

Since they had such a “great deal” with a Facebook discount code I decided what’s the harm in just trying it?  I mean, I’m getting a good deal!  Yeah… just let me believe that, k?  So… after it arrived, here’s what happened…

I. Love. It.  No joke-this stuff is amazing!  I’ve been using it for years now and I have to tell you… it’s my go-to for cleaning almost anything.  Here’s why I love it:

  • Safe around kids and pets
  • Disinfects BETTER than bleach (yes, you read that correctly…)
  • Doesn’t stain my fabrics
  • Deodorizes (hey… I know you have stinky shoes, too… don’t act like you don’t)
  • Cost effective
  • Refills may be ordered on Amazon… AMAZON, YOU GUYS.  If that doesn’t sell you on this product, I don’t know what will…

How it Works

Force of Nature uses only salt, vinegar, and water that uses electricity to create electrolyzed water making a product that disinfects and deodorizes in a safe, non-toxic way.  A starter kit includes a spray bottle, a mixing bottle, a 5-pack of salt and vinegar mix refills, and the device that electrifies the salt, vinegar, and water to create the Force of Nature cleaner.

The Verdict

The Good…

So far, so good.  I’ve had great luck with it as a cleaner and deodorizer and it is far cheaper than purchasing multiple products.  My favorite part is that it is so safe I sometimes spray down my child’s pacifiers, rinse, and they’re good to go!  It is now my everything cleaner from counter tops, sinks, bathroom counters, stinky shoes, wet dog smell (looking at you, Rem), and any general messes  I come across.  I’ll have to confess I always forget to try it out on carpet stains.  We generally don’t have massive stains in our carpet, but what I do come across I find myself grabbing the Resolve and forgetting all about my handy-dandy cure all on my counter top.

It’s really simple to make the cleaner and even easier to order refills.  I purchase mine on Amazon, because, well… Amazon.

The Bad…

There aren’t many negatives that I have to complain about. The only inconvenience I see is that the chemicals break down after 14 days, so new cleaner must be made every 2 weeks. To me, I’ll accept this minor inconvenience when it’s easy to use, safe, and most of all, extremely effective at cleaning.

But What Do I REALLY Think?

Totally worth replacing many other cleaners!  My selling points: easy to make, safe, cleans effectively, competitive price.  I found myself cleaning A LOT of things in my house with vinegar.  While that’s fairly effective, vinegar isn’t necessarily safe on many surfaces and stinks.  Like, smells horrible for days. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about Force of Nature as a safe, effective cleaner.  You’ll see it on my counter top ready to kill germs and squash the stench for a long time to come!

Instant Pot Deal!

Instant Pot Deal!

I have wanted an Instant Pot for so long, but haven’t been willing to shell out the money for one. If you’re like me, there’s a Kohl’s deal that may convince you otherwise!

Kohl’s currently has a 6-qt Instant Pot (normally $129.99) for $99. Pretty good deal… but wait! There’s more! If you have a Kohl’s charge, here are some awesome promo codes to make it even better:

  • 30% off with Kohl’s charge (BBQ30)
  • $10 off Home purchase (HOME10)
  • Free Shipping (FREE4JULY)

With all of these deals you’ll walk away with (or have it shipped if you’re like me 😉) a $130 Instant Pot for around $63 before tax. If you have Kohl’s cash they may just end up giving it to you for free… but really, awesome deal!

What a Difference a Day Makes Craft

What a Difference a Day Makes Craft

IMG_4034I always see pins on Pinterest about the “What a Difference a Day Makes” DIY.  After much delay, I actually attempted my own version.  I figured there HAD to be a template somewhere, right?  I mean, as much as I see this darn thing repinned someone had to post their template, but alas… no template was found.  I did however find a template for a Microsoft Project, um… project (yeah, that sounds odd to me as well…), but the normal, average, person doesn’t have Project (or maybe that’s just me).  I took matters into my own hands and decided I would make my own template in PowerPoint.  After about 15 minutes (yeah, a miracle happened… FIFTEEN MINUTES), I was able to make a template I was pretty proud of.

I’ll describe my process in a few steps:

  • Create a new, blank PowerPoint slide (without text boxes)
  • Change the size of the PowerPoint document to 8×10
    • Go to Design Tab and click on the “Slide Size” drop-down menu in the “Customize” section.  Choose “Custom Slide Size…”
    • Change size to 8″ width and 10″ height.  When you choose this size and apply it will ask if you’d like to maximize or scale the document (this is if you’re operating in Windows 10 with a newer version of Office).  Choose to maximize the document.
  • Create new text boxes that will serve as the field for the dates, names, and “What a difference a day makes” saying at the bottom.  I played with text box sizes for the date until I was happy with the amount of space the text box occupied and lined them all up in the center of the document.  I did the same with the names underneath the date.

PPT Template

  •  After the template was set, I chose fonts and font sizes that worked well together.

What a difference a day makes

  • Print it!
  • Frame it!
  • Voila… meaningful decorating on the cheap!

Easy Baked Chicken Thighs

Easy Baked Chicken Thighs

These chicken thighs are crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and have just enough flavor to be delicious, but not overpowering.  They’re great for a busy weeknight because you season them, throw them in the oven, make a few simple sides to go with them and you have a simple, delicious dinner.  I found this particular recipe from allrecipes-check out more on their website if you like this one!

Ingredients

  • 8 bone-in chicken thighs with skin
  • olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/4 tsp onion salt
  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp ground thyme
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp ground pepper

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  2. Arrange chicken thighs on prepared baking sheet and coat with olive oil.
  3. Combine garlic salt, onion salt, oregano, thyme, paprika, and pepper together in a small container with a lid.  Close the lid and shake container until spices are thoroughly mixed.  Sprinkle spice mixture liberally over chicken thighs.
  4. Bake chicken in the preheated oven until skin is crispy, thighs are no longer pink at the bone, and the juices run clear, about 1 hour.  An instant-read thermometer inserted near the bone should read 165 degrees F.

This has to be one of the easiest things to make on a busy weeknight.  There is hardly any prep time whatsoever and they taste great.  The good thing is, these are on sale frequently and you can purchase a large family pack that usually has anywhere from 8 – 10 thighs in a package.  You know what that means… LEFTOVERS FOR LUNCH ALL WEEK!  Maybe I’m the only one excited about that, but to me, that means no figuring out lunches for a few days.  I usually make a simple side like whole grain brown rice or my personal favorite… shells and cheese.  Make a simple vegetable and you’re good to go.

Most people don’t care for any bone-in meat or meat with skin, but the skin gives it so much more flavor.  Try it and see what you think!

Keep an eye out for some new developments! Soon a recipe of the week section will be added with my full review. With it? Not worth it? Best recipe ever? They’ll be coming soon!

In addition to new recipes, everyone needs a good laugh every now and then. I will be adding a section entitled “Toddler-ese”. This is my take on “Kids Say the Darndest Things”. I’ve had some doozies, so I figured why nor document them all!

How I Work Full Time AND Manage to Cook Dinner Nearly Every Night

How I Work Full Time AND Manage to Cook Dinner Nearly Every Night

This has taken some time to master (and I use the word master loosely), but I have finally been able to regularly make home cooked meals for my family, even as a working mom.  Is it easy?  No, but I’ve found some things that have made my life a little easier.  I also keep an open mind to the possibility of my plans being completely derailed by a toddler who wants to sit and my lap and read (um, yes, please… we can order pizza in that case!) or getting home too late to even begin to cook the chicken breasts I thawed in the fridge.

All of the ideas I provide are just what works for me-find a way that works for you and makes your life easier so you can spend more time with you family!

Download a Recipe App

The Recipe Box App EmblemNo, really… do it. You have no idea how much decision-making time this will cut out of your life.  Who has time to make food decisions?  Not me… or I, or… whatever.  My favorite recipe app is The Recipe Box.  It allows you to import from the web or add your own.  At $3.99 the price is right and I have two copies-on my iPad and iPhone and you can sync them to one another.

If you’re just not a fan of using apps and you prefer good old paper recipes, browse yours instead of an app!

Meal Planning

Once all of your recipes are in one convenient location, it’s simpler to browse your options.  Choose a few that don’t require fresh ingredients. There’s nothing worse than planning a week full of meals, then having to throw away half of the ingredients because you don’t actually get to make a few meals.  If a few meals are planned that require several fresh ingredients and a few are planned that use mainly jarred or canned ingredients, then you’re more likely to succeed at wasting as few ingredients as possible.  I also try to plan very few meals that require me to chop a million vegetables-ain’t nobody got time for that!  Usually I select at least one or two crock pot meals.  Chop the veggies or brown the meat the night before and the next morning throw it all in.

Start small-plan for 2 or 3 fully prepared meals that week, then work your way to a full week if that’s your goal!

I also keep a small chalkboard in my kitchen to remind my family (ok, ok… so I use it to remind myself) what we’ll be having every evening.

Make Your Shopping List

Keep a running list on your fridge. When you run low on something, add it to the list. Add all of the ingredients you don’t currently have for the meals you planned for the week as well.

Browse Grocery Ads

Choose ONE store you will go to this week. It becomes overwhelming to try to make it to every sale. Choose one store and see what might be on sale that you would normally use or may need to stock up on. Add these to your current list.

Shop ‘Til You Drop or My Personal Favorite… Order Pickup

Yep-spend the money on an order pickup. If time is a problem for you, it’s money well spent. This also allows me to see what might be on sale, but didn’t make it to the sale ad.  If an item on my list isn’t on sale and I can do without it another week, I leave it on the list for the following week.  If you prefer to pick up your own groceries and have the time, even better!

New Skincare Faves

New Skincare Faves

So, you know how your skincare regimen works for a hot second and you think, “Wow!  I finally have this skincare thing under control…”, then, BOOM: you breakout worse than you ever did in your teens.  Well, here are my new revised suggestions… until they stop working.

African Black Soap

african black soapIt’s as simple as its name: a bar of soap that happens to be a lovely shade of… well, black.  It’s simple: wash your face with it twice a day.  Yes.  You heard me-wash your face.  Simple, right?  This stuff is so great at removing dirt and oil that I use it for my makeup brushes and even the dreaded cleansing of the beauty blender.  GUYS-it cleans the beauty blender.  No need to say anything more.  Oh, one more thing-it’s CHEAP!

Shea Moisture also makes a great scrub for acne prone skin.  I use this twice a week (sometimes more in the winter) to remove dead skin and keep my skin feeling soft.

Moisturizer with Collagen

collagen moisturizer

St. Ives makes a great moisturizer containing both Collagen and Elastin.  I’m hesitant to admit that I need it, but… it definitely does the job when it comes to fine lines and *gulp* wrinkles.  It’s very affordable and a little bit goes a long way.

The Dos and Don’ts of Online Shopping

The Dos and Don’ts of Online Shopping

 I. Love. Shopping.  I don’t like how much time it takes now that I’m a working mom.  I have become a GREAT online shopper.  Great deals and even greater products in a fraction of the time.

The key to a great online experience is to find what works for you.  Once you nail down what you’re really looking for don’t get distracted by a “great deal”.  I’ve been there… so that funky shirt was only $5.  Doesn’t really matter when you don’t wear it!  $5 down the drain.  Here are some tips to help you avoid the pitfalls of online shopping.

Clothes. Clothes.  More Clothes.

Where to Go

What type of clothes are your favorite?  Chances are you have that go-to store that you absolutely love.  You know how all of their clothes fit and can pretty much pull an item off of the rack and know immediately if it will look good on you.  Well, there are online stores that have the same safe and familiar feel. Two of my favorites happen to be Gap and Old Navy.  I know how their clothes fit, what cuts flatter my body type, and I know the price range I have to work with.

Once you have your go-to sites, keep your cart full at all times-you never know when there may be a pop-up sale… you’ll be ready!  The clothes aren’t going anywhere, so it’s time to have a spending strategy…

Price Tag

I usually have an idea of how much I want to pay for certain items in my mind.  I never pay much for clothes because I tend to favor trendy pieces over traditional lately because I can find great deals.  When I start to feel like I’m starting to be not-so-trendy, I ditch them for some new trends at minimal cost.

Always look for promo codes.  Always.  There are usually great promo codes out there and I rarely settle for anything less than a 30% promo code in addition to items being on sale.  This is when having your cart full comes in handy-once you see a sale and have promo codes, you can decide what items are worth purchasing and which items are still a little too pricey and you can purchase them later.

Shipping

There are very few sites I will pay for shipping.  Most of the time if you purchase $50 or more in merchandise or have their credit card (Gap/Old Navy, Victoria’s Secret, Target).  Sometimes being able to have items shipped directly to your door outweighs the cost of taking the time to drive to the store to purchase items.

Cosmetics/Beauty Products

Promo codes. Promo codes. Promo codes.  There are frequently promo codes or free item promotions for cosmetics from Ulta and Sephora.  Target also frequently has gift card promotions for purchasing a dollar amount of beauty products.  I normally don’t purchase beauty products online unless there is a large giveaway in addition to a coupon.

Although some higher priced products such as Too Faced or Benefit at Ulta are excluded in coupons, they frequently have free item promotions for those product lines.

Amazon

Amazon is one of my favorite go-to online shopping options.  However, I have found that sometimes deals aren’t so great for some items.  Always do a quick Google search on the item you’re considering to make sure there isn’t a high markup.  You never know… another site just may beat Amazon’s prices.

Credit Cards

I’m normally not an advocate of store/company credit cards, HOWEVER, they can be extremely beneficial for online shoppers.  Here are some of the perks they provide:

  • Free shipping
  • Cardholder exclusive sales, promotions, and coupons
  • Loyalty rewards

I never carry a balance on any of my credit cards, so these benefits really help me out when finding the best online deals.  Here are some of the cards that have great benefits to online shoppers:

  • Gap/Old Navy/Banana Republic
    • Free shipping
    • Bonus promotions/sales
    • Loyalty rewards
  • Amazon
    • Free Shipping (with Amazon Prime)
    • Credit applied after application
    • Rewards points on purchases on Amazon.com and anywhere Visa is accepted
  • Kohl’s
    • Bonus promotions/sales
  • Victoria’s Secret
    • Cardholder promotions/sales
    • Rewards for purchases

Think rebate apps are too good to be true?  I did, too… until I found these apps!

Ibotta

Ibotta
https://ibotta.com/
This app is fairly simple to use.  First, a category is chosen such as Grocery, Apparel, or seasonal.  Next, a store is chosen.  Most stores are available on this app and there are even online deals available quite frequently.

Once a category and store is chosen, available rebates are listed.  When a rebate is selected it must be unlocked by viewing a video (most are around 30 seconds in length), taking a poll, viewing a recipe, or reading a fact about the product.  Once rebates are unlocked and items have been purchased, each item is scanned that contains a rebate.  Once all items are scanned, submit a photo of the receipt.  When the rebates have been approved you will receive a notification.

Most products eligible for rebates in this app are brand specific, but there are some that are redeemable for any brand.  In the past, there are have been many “any brand” rebates at a time, but more recently “any brand” rebates have been fairly limited.

Once $25 in rebates have been accrued a refund may be requested by selecting a gift card to be redeemed (yes… Starbucks is an option!) or it may be deposited into a PayPal account.

Find&Save

http://www.findnsave.com/
http://www.findnsave.com/
This is probably my favorite rebate app to date.  This app has “Cash Dash” rewards.  Upon opening the app there is a list of retailers or general rewards.  When a Cash Dash is selected, an image of a receipt may be uploaded for rewards such as a percentage or dollar amount rebate for what was spent.

Once $25 in rebates has been reached a deposit will be made to a registered PayPal account.  I have already made $75 in the past few months from this app.

Checkout 51

https://www.checkout51.com/
https://www.checkout51.com/
This app is very similar to Ibotta.  There is usually a weekly “Pick an offer” rebate that contains commonly purchased fruits and vegetables.  Rebates normally include branded products such as Kraft String Cheese, Minute Ricce, and Venus Razors and refills.  This app also requires a photo submission of receipts for rebates

Once $20 in rebates has been reached a depposit will be made to a registered PayPal account.

MobiSave

https://www.mobisave.com/
https://www.mobisave.com/
This app is a little more generic than the previously mentioned apps.  All rebates must be selected prior to any shopping trips submitted.  Normally there are rebates such as bacon, orange juice, and onion.  A photo or a receipt is submitted for approval of rebates.

Rebates are deposited into a registered PayPal account and there is no minimum for deposits being made.

SavingStar

https://savingstar.com/
https://savingstar.com/
This app has many rebates that can be achieved over time.  For example, purchase $12 in Dole frozen fruit before the offer expires and receive $4 in rebates.  A photo submission of a receipt is also required for this app.

Rebates may be redeemed after accruing $5 in rebates.

Shrink

http://www.shrinktheapp.com/
http://www.shrinktheapp.com/
I have yet to actually find a rebate I can use in this app.  Many of the options are “health food” options, which is great, but none of the offers seem to be any products I purchase.

Snap

https://snap.groupon.com/
https://snap.groupon.com/
This app started off strong, but slowly declined.  There originally were rebates such as Pom Wonderful pomegranate juice and “any beverage” rebates.  However, now the products listed never seem to be anything I purchase.

Shopkick

https://www.shopkick.com/
https://www.shopkick.com/
I wanted to like this app, but there were too many things that had to be done to earn “points”.  To earn points I had to scan an item in a store, take a picture of an item in a store, or purchase an item.  It was too much hassle for too little reward.

App Summaries

All in all, my favorite is Find&Save.  It’s quick, easy, and has the most reward for very, very little effort.  Ibotta was initially my favorite, but the rebate options is slowly dwindling and the redeem amount has now increased from $20 to $25, so it takes longer to earn rewards.  MobiSave is a fairly new app for me, but I like it so far.  The only downside to this app is that all rewards must be selected prior to every shopping trip.  There you have it-go forth and shop!
